Wind energy

As wind turbines are built bigger, the effects of lightning have  become more significant.

The higher structures, up to 90-110 meters, are more susceptible to lightning and the cost of replacing repaired or new components on site significantly increases with turbine size. With the continuing growth of the number of wind farms into the EU the yearly cost of turbine damage will increase,  unless design and installation practice improves.

Failing in handling adequately the issue of lightning damage, and consequent hazard, will also have an adverse effect on public confidence in wind energy.
